Monica M. Behrends, 83, of Chebanse passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee. She was born on May 4, 1940 at St. Mary's Hospital in Kankakee, a daughter of Richard and Anna Mae (Hayes) Landry. Monica married Duane Behrends on September 17, 1960 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bradley and he survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Diane Behrends of Chebanse and Beth Behrends of Ashkum; five sons, Dennis (Renee) Behrends of Danforth, Glenn (Cynthia) Behrends of Bloomington, Lyle Behrends of Ashkum, Alan (Jessie) Behrends of Clifton, and David (Sarah) Behrends of Cabery; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Larry (Celeste) Landry of Bradley; Tom (Debbie) Landry of Tucson, Arizona; and Ray (Ruth) Landry of Champaign; one sister, Teresa (Randy) Trudeau of Bourbonnais; one brother-in-law, Marvin (Lenette) Behrends of Clifton; and four sisters-in-law, Sharon Foster of Paxton, Marilyn Starkey of Normal, Marla (Randy) Behrends of Forrest, and Sharlene (Jerome) Finegan of Clifton.Monica was preceded in death by both of her parents; one sister, Barbara Brown; three brothers-in-law, Dallas Behrends, Max Starkey and Cliff Foster; and one daughter-in-law, Melinda Behrends.
Monica was a parishioner of Sts. Mary and Joseph's Catholic Church in Chebanse for 43 years. She taught CCD at Herscher and Chebanse for many years. She attended grade school at St Joseph's Grade School in Bradley and graduated from BBCHS in 1958. Monica was "Woman of the Year" for the Council of Catholic Women. She was also a member of the Young at Heart Senior Citizens Group of Chebanse where she enjoyed trips and activities with them. Monica was a talented artist who enjoyed ceramics and painting, flower gardening, crafts, and reading in her spare time. She also served as a 4-H leader for Milks Grove Jr. Farmer and Farmerettes, and was a member of the Milks Grove Home Extension.
Visitation will be on Sunday, September 24, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Knapp Funeral Home in Clifton. Funeral mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 25, 2023 at Sts. Mary and Joseph's Catholic Church in Chebanse with Fr. Doug Hauber officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Clifton.
