Reuben R. Bettermann, 84 of Crescent City, IL passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 at Provena St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 7, at Segur-Knapp Funeral Home in Watseka. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 8, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Watseka. Pastor Donald Love will officiate. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Elwood, IL.
He was born August 23, 1925 in Miltona, MN, a son of Gustaf and Agnes Schmidt Bettermann. He married Dorothy Koester on July 22, 1951 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Watseka by Pastor B. F. Prange.
Reuben proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II, participating in the Pacific Theater in the Philippines and serving in The Army Occupation of Japan. Reuben worked as custodian at Crescent-Iroquois High School for 22 years and was elected Crescent Township Road Commissioner for 12 consecutive years. He retired in 1990, residing in Crescent City.
He is survived by his wife; one daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Mark Rogers of Boerne, TX; two sons and one daughter-in-law, David and Debra Ann of Crescent City and Alan of Madison, WI; four grandchildren; one sister, Hilda Koester of Danforth; one sister-in-law, Delores Bettermann of Alexandria, MN; two brothers-in-law and spouses, Melvin and Janet Koester and Donald and Marie Koester all of Crescent City; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters.
He enjoyed fishing, trapping and being outdoors, and was a kind and loving husband and father.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Scholarship Fund at Calvary Lutheran Church or Donor’s Choice.
